Beth Heke from New Zealand, left, despite her parents' disapproval, her proud and resent family to get married with Jake “the Muss”. 18 years later, they live in a slum and have five children. Beth is from a family which is related to the old, real Maoris and for that reason, she can see what their race have become. "Once were warriors" is a violent love drama about the Maori warriors' descendants - hence the name: Once were warriors – who in lack of self and affiliation resorts to alcohol and violence.
Jake is no exception. He radiates with sexual energy and is also a very hard machinist who often picks up a fight (therefore the nickname “the Muss”). His alcohol misuse destroys the marriage and gradually spreads the violence from the pub to their home. Besides is he unemployed and spends most of the times with his friends, drinking or doing crime to get money.
