Ray Bradbury's short story 'A Piece of Wood' expresses two different views of war; warism and pacifism. But what is Ray Bradbury's message in this text?
In this short story an official and a sergeant represent the two contrasts pacifism and warism. Pacifism is an anti-violence movement, instead of war its aim is peace. The sergeant represents the pacifistic view, because his only desire is peace:
“To live in peace. To learn that during the night, somehow, the guns of the world had rusted, the bacteria had turned sterile in their bomb castings, the tanks had sunk like prehistoric monsters into roads suddenly made tar pits. That's what I'd like.” (p.86, l.4-9)
The sergeant's conviction is that war is caused by technology; weapons and tanks. For that reason peace for him is equivalent to no war-technology. The official on the other hand is devoted to warism; he is convinced of war will always exist:"... Køb adgang for at læse mere
