The koala is a marsupial pungdyr, like most of the mammals ("pattedyr") in Australia. A fully grown koala is between 60 and 85 cm long and weighs between 5 and 15 kg. The colour of the fur coat is reddish or greyish, while the belly is off-white.
Formerly ("førhen") there lived many koalas in East-Australia’s eucalyptus-forests, but the number is reduced a lot since the Europeans arrived. Thousands of koalas got killed because of there soft and valuable fur coat.
In 1930 the koalas was wiped out in most of the areas where they formerly were ordinary. That is why the koala is total-protected today. There is no risk that the koala will die out, but they are still protected. Most of them lives in game preserves ("vildt reservater")... Køb adgang for at læse mere
